NICE guidelines you need to know: TA1 Guidance on the Extraction of Wisdom Teeth

Main points of the NICE guidelines on wisdom teeth removal that you need to know.

  • Prophylactic removal of pathology free wisdom teeth has been discontinued on the NHS
  • Surgical removal should be limited to patients with pathology, including: unrestorable caries, Periapical pathology, cellulitis, abscess, osteomyelitis, internal or external resorption to the tooth or neighbouring teeth, disease of the follicle i.e. cysts, teeth impeding reconstructive jaw surgery or within field of resection during cancer treatment
  • Plaque formation is a risk factor but NOT an indication for surgical removal. Regarding pericoronitis, surgical removal is only indicated for second or subsequent episodes, or the first if it is particularly severe.

For full guidance, see publication on the NICE website.
